care for kids camp

Serving our communities foster children

Summer camp. For some it’s a privilege. For others, it’s a convenience.

But for the underserved children in our communities, it’s just a dream. A fantasy that may never be realized. Another opportunity lost in a life filled with trauma and tragedy. But an opportunity that, if realized, may make the difference between confidence or despair….self esteem or self loathing….a productive contributor to society or part of the problem.

The care for kids camp for foster children focuses on children who, through no fault of their own, are placed into the foster care system due to circumstances that include abuse, neglect, abandonment and parental incarceration. The Care For Kids Foundation is investing in the opportunity for these children to experience one week of residential summer camp in beautiful Brown County, Indiana.

It’s a camp experience filled with all the fun and learning experiences that you can pack into a weeks time. In addition to all the “traditional” camp encounters (horseback riding, swimming, canoeing, kayaking, arts and crafts, outback camping, nature walks, high ropes challenge courses etc…), the care for kids camp also includes life skill components that help engender a sense of hope, self esteem, self confidence, team building skills and respect for yourself and others.

In 2007, the care for kids camp served 96 children between the ages of 7 and 14 for one week of residential camping with our partner, Happy Hollow Camp in Brown County. In 2008, the care for kids camp doubled that amount and engendered a sense of hope for nearly 200 children. The camper/counselor ratio was 3:1, so the children received all the attention they hoped for on what turned out to be their first camp experience for the majority of these children. In fact, for many, it was their first, week long time frame away from their “normal” environment.

Judging by observations from board members, counselors and the camp director and staff, the

care for kids camp was one of the best camps this year due to the type of children served, with their eagerness to learn, compassion and respect shown for others and a willingness to try things they may have never had the opportunity to try before.

The partnership with Happy Hollow Camp, the participation and coordination from all the foster care social service agencies who helped locate these deserving children and the financial support from corporations, foundations and especially individuals made this opportunity a reality for 200 children within the foster care community.

Our goal is to continue to serve the community and grow this experience into the future. With your help, the social service agencies challenged with locating these children are confident that The Care For Kids Foundation can to up the ante and give even more deserving foster children the opportunity of a lifetime that lasts a lifetime in the summer of 2009!

Thank you for your continued support in our effort to serve the underserved.

If we change a child's life direction by a couple of degrees at an impressionable age, it might just be the opportunity that these beautiful but sometimes overlooked children need to make a huge difference down life's road.
