Nita Maas Memorial Fund
This fund was created by the Care for Kids Foundation at the request of Tina Maas, John Maas and Pam Maciak to honor their mother, Nita Maas and to benefit children in need in our community.
Nita Maas’ dedication to volunteer work is practically unprecedented in Indianapolis. She spent thousands of hours dedicated to community service. Her countless positions ranged from helper to president of numerous organizations. She was a member of the Indianapolis Council of Women, Family Support Center Auxiliary, Indianapolis Arthritis Guild, Women’s Department Club, Clowes Hall Women’s Committee, Starlighters, New Hope Foundation, Circle of May Wright Sewell at the Propylaeum and the Children’s Guardian Home. She was also on the Board of Directors for New Dawn, Inc. Nita served as the President of the Indiana Council of Women, the Co-President of the Theatre Arts Guild and the President of the PTO at John Strange Elementary School, Eastwood Middle School and North Central High School. She was a tremendous advocate for persons with disabilities and is credited with founding Indianapolis’ first Girl Scout Troop for mentally disabled young women.
One of the causes closest to Nita’s heart was the Marion County Juvenile Center. A personal encounter with a girl who had spent time at the center motivated her to reform the system. In 1979, she became the chairwoman for the advisory council that called for a new juvenile facility. In 1989, construction of the new juvenile center began and due to her great efforts and success, Nita was presented with the 1989 Jefferson Award for Public Service. This prestigious award was a culmination of 30 years of dedicated and diligent service to the city of Indianapolis.
Nita would have wished that contributions in her memory be made to The Children’s Guardian Home. Since The Children’s Guardian Home is no longer in existence, contributions in her memory can be made to the Care for Kids Foundation’s Nita Maas Memorial Fund. This fund will benefit children in need in our community. Contributions can be made as directed above or by contacting Rene Chamberlain, Care for Kids Foundation Managing Director. (317) 257-5437 |
